Diesel Generators

A diesel generator uses a diesel engine to drive an alternator that produces regulated AC electricity for backup or prime power. Bundu Power supplies silent and industrial diesel generators from 5 kVA to 2500 kVA for homes, farms, businesses and heavy industry across South Africa.

How Does a Diesel Generator Work?

A diesel generator is a self-contained power plant. Diesel fuel is injected into the engine cylinders, where compression heat ignites the charge. That combustion turns the crankshaft, which spins the rotor of an alternator. Magnetic fields in the alternator induce alternating current in the stator windings. Voltage regulators and governors hold output near the set voltage and 50 Hz frequency as load changes.

Modern sets add a digital control panel for auto-start, fault protection and metering, plus a canopy or open skid, cooling system, battery and fuel tank. With an automatic transfer switch (ATS), the generator can start when the grid fails and transfer the building load without manual intervention.

Why Is Diesel the Most Common Generator Above 10 kVA?

Below roughly 10 kVA, petrol and inverter sets remain popular for portability and low capital cost. Once loads climb into the teens of kVA and beyond — whole-home backup, workshops, retail, farms and factories — diesel becomes the default choice for good engineering and commercial reasons:

Sustained-Load Efficiency

Diesel engines convert more of each litre into useful work under continuous or high average load, cutting fuel cost per kWh compared with petrol at the same duty.

Torque & Motor Starting

Higher torque helps start compressors, pumps, conveyors and HVAC without oversized petrol engines or severe voltage dip.

Durability & Service Life

Industrial diesel platforms are built for long running hours, structured maintenance intervals and spare-parts ecosystems across South Africa.

Fuel Availability

Diesel is stocked nationally — from metros to mines and farms — supporting both standby outages and remote prime-power sites.

Scalable Capacity

The same technology scales from silent 5–20 kVA home sets to 500–2500 kVA industrial units and synchronised multi-set plants.

Prime & Standby Duty

Diesel gensets are rated for emergency standby or continuous prime power, matching South African load-shedding and off-grid realities.

Manufacturing & Industry

Industrial diesel generators protect production lines, compressors and process plant from costly stoppages.

Mining & Heavy Plant

High-kVA and 525 V sets support shafts, plant rooms and surface operations, including synchronised multi-megawatt plants.

Healthcare & Data Centres

Hospitals, clinics, telecoms and data rooms need reliable standby with ATS, monitoring and N+1 redundancy where required.

Cold Chain & Reefer

Warehouses and container yards rely on diesel backup (and dedicated reefer power) to protect temperature-controlled stock.

Construction & Events

Temporary site power, tower lighting support and event infrastructure often use mobile diesel generators on trailers.

Emergency Response

Municipal, NGO and disaster-recovery teams deploy diesel gensets for shelters, water treatment and communications hubs.

How to Choose the Right Diesel Generator

Size From Your Load List

List essential circuits (kW or amps), note motor starting loads, then add spare capacity. Use our power calculator or ask sales for a quote against a DB schedule.

Match Phase & Voltage

Confirm single-phase 230 V vs three-phase 380/400 V (or 525 V for mining). The generator must align with your main board and largest three-phase equipment.

Plan ATS & Controls

Most standby installs need an ATS, correctly rated cables and a control panel. Options include remote monitoring and DeepSea synchronising controllers for multi-set sites.

Budget for Service

Schedule oil, filters and load-bank testing. Bundu Power offers parts, servicing and maintenance plans so your diesel set starts when you need it.

Diesel Generators: Frequently Asked Questions

A diesel generator converts chemical energy in diesel fuel into electricity. The diesel engine combusts fuel to turn a crankshaft, which spins an alternator. The alternator produces AC power at a regulated voltage and frequency — typically 230 V single phase or 380/400 V three phase at 50 Hz in South Africa. A control panel manages starting, protection and output monitoring.

Above about 10 kVA, diesel engines deliver better sustained-load fuel efficiency, higher torque for motor starting, longer service intervals and proven durability under continuous or standby duty. Diesel fuel is widely available across South Africa, and the platform scales from small silent home sets through multi-megawatt industrial plants — advantages petrol and gas units struggle to match at higher ratings.

Standby (emergency) rating is the maximum output for backup power during utility outages, typically for a limited number of hours per year. Prime rating is the continuous output a set can deliver as the main power source, with a variable load, and is usually lower than the standby figure. Always size critical loads against the correct rating for your duty cycle.

Single-phase diesel generators (typically 5–50 kVA) suit homes, small offices and light commercial sites on standard 230 V circuits. Three-phase sets (from about 15 kVA upward) are the standard for workshops, factories, farms, mines and larger buildings that run three-phase motors, HVAC and distribution boards. Match the generator phase to your main electrical supply and largest loads.

Add the running kW/kVA of essential loads, then allow headroom for motor starting currents and future growth — often 20–30% above the calculated running load. Homes may need 5–20 kVA; offices and retail often 20–100 kVA; industrial and mining sites commonly start from 100 kVA and scale into the hundreds or thousands of kVA. Bundu Power can help size from a load list or site survey.

With adequate fuel, cooling and scheduled maintenance, a correctly rated diesel generator can run for many hours or days. Runtime depends on tank capacity, load percentage and whether bulk tanks or auto-refuel systems are fitted. Silent canopy sets used for standby typically run for the duration of an outage; prime-power industrial plants are designed for extended daily operation with proper servicing.
